Character sketch
Cole Mathews is the main character in the book Touching Spirit Bear. Cole is “An innocent looking baby-faced fifteen year old from Minneapolis who has been in trouble with the law half of his life.’’Pg5 Cole was born and raised in Minneapolis Minnesota. For quite a while like I said Cole has been getting in trouble with the law he has also been rebelling against his now divorced parents, for many reasons. Coles mother I a total alcoholic who drinks away her days and leaving just enough room for sanity to wake up and put on her innocent face in the morning. Cole really isn’t found of his mother mostly because when it comes to rough times with his dad and I mean literally rough, she just sits back and lets her now ex-husband and Cole’s father beat him. Cole through and through has total hatred for his abusive dad.
Cole’s personality is very aggressive; he is a violent person. After reading the Touching Spirit Bear I have gotten to know Cole like no one else I got to learn that he likes to swim and that he’s very good at it, he also likes to wrestle. I also go to learn big things and little things that he dislikes. Cole really dislikes being called Champ by Garvey you can tell Cole hates it when he says to him, “Quit calling me champ…” One of Cole’s fears is his father Cole is scared whenever he is around his father because whenever he’s around him he is scared he is going to get beat like he did before. Cole without a doubt prides himself on being strong, tuff made of steel. Cole even says in the book that’s “he didn’t trust anyone who wasn’t afraid of him pg3&4
Cole’s behavior in a few short words is angry, short tempered, and violent. Another horrible behavior trait Cole Mathews has is that he thinks the world revolves around him and whatever he does wrong it’s always someone else’s fault. Cole never seems to have any compassion for others he always finds a way to weasel himself out of things ;or trying to make or at least trying to make others think its al their fault Coles says on page five in the book “…He wouldn’t even be here if Peter Driscal would have known to fight back.”pg8 Cole throughout the book has numerous thoughts but what I found kind of funny is that throughout the beginning of the book Cole thinks mean horrible devious thoughts like when he jabs his fist in the air and yells, ‘’ ‘Yes! The world was made up of suckers and fools and today Garvey was at the top of the heap.’ ‘’ Near the end of the book Cole starts to think better and be better. There was a perfect part in the book on page 136 when Cole could have easily escaped. “Cole eyed the aluminum skiff sitting unguarded. If he wanted to escape he could escape now would be the perfect time. He shook his head.” That there truly proves to me that Cole was improving and changing maybe Cole wasn’t entirely changed but he was definitely improving in my eyes.
Some obstacles Cole has to overcome are his ager Cole learned to cope with his anger by going to the pond every morning and soaking. Cole had to learn a lesson that “People spend life time’s breaking their stick to get rid of anger. But always anger remains, and they think that they have failed.” Pg144 Cole over all of his obstacles has possessed feelings and learned to look at things like an eagle (view things from a different perspective). Another quality Cole poses is trust because I feel that in order for anybody especially Cole to learn any new feelings you need trust. The Spirit Bear one hundred percent proved to Cole trust “Ten feet away, the bear paused where Coles spit had hit the grass. It lowered its head and sniffed. Still eyeing raised its head, eyes mild and curious, then turned and sauntered away.” Page 93.Now if that doesn’t prove trust then I don’t know what does.
